Step 1 – Sit on the FRONT HALF of the bench. This gives you maximum flexibility through the pelvis, allowing your torso and legs to move freely.
Step 2 – Keep your legs hip width apart, and keep the feet under the knees (except on your pedal foot). This gives you a solid foundation to support the lower half of the body and permits free movement.
Step 3 – Reach your arms out in front of you. Your knuckles should hit the fallboard (or the end of the white keys if you’re using a digital keyboard). This means you’re the right distance away.
Step 4 –Play a few notes in the middle of the keyboard. Is the tip of your elbow level with the top of the white keys? If so, you’re sitting at the right height.
What is Good Posture?
Posture should not be fixed or stiff. Our hands, wrists or elbows must be prepared move in any direction at all times. When we maintain an ideal posture, we can prevent pains or stiffness in the neck, shoulders, back, arms, hands and fingers; it can even help us overcome stage fright.
