Modern usage has stretched the word. Today, square-seated adjustable seats with a knob or hydraulic mechanism often carry the “piano stool” label, particularly from UK sellers who use the term as a catch-all for any solo piano seat. Knob-Adjustable Piano Stools

A knob-adjustable piano stool uses one or two threaded knobs to lock a sliding inner frame at your chosen height – typically anywhere from 18.5 to 22.2 inches in our catalog range. Skip the Victorian spinners unless you want furniture, not equipment. Fixed-height stools – padded seats on four legs with no adjustment at all – have the same answer: they only make sense if every player who uses that piano is exactly the same size. How to Spot a Quality Stool

Most of the piano stools that arrive in our workshop for inspection fail on the same points. Seat padding that feels fine in a showroom compresses to nothing in six months. Metal joints that look welded are actually riveted – and rivets work loose from the constant micro-vibrations of a practice room. Wood legs that feel solid are held by glue alone on a corner joint that should have dovetails. None of this is visible from a product photo. You need to know what to look for.

  • Laced or woven stitching on seat upholstery, not staples. Staple-attached leather or PU leather pulls away from the foam within one to two years under regular use. Laced stitching distributes tension across the perimeter and holds indefinitely.
  • Welded metal joints, not riveted. On adjustable stools with metal inner frames, the joints where vertical and horizontal members meet should be continuously welded. Riveted joints loosen. Run a finger around every joint – a smooth weld bead is what you want.
  • Dovetail or mortise-and-tenon leg joints, not glue-only. Solid wood legs attached with glue alone on a butt joint will crack along the grain under lateral load. Dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joints lock mechanically and hold even if the glue degrades.
  • Internal seat bracing. Press the underside of the foam: the platform underneath should have a cross-brace. Without it, the seat pan flexes under load and the upholstery eventually buckles at the center.
  • Smooth machined mechanisms. On knob-adjust models, the sliding inner frame should move without binding or grinding. On hydraulic models, the lift should rise and lower at a consistent rate. Any hesitation or grit in the mechanism at purchase means a failed part within two years.

In March 2026, I pulled six stools off our incoming batch in the Guangzhou workshop – three knob-adjust models and three hydraulics – and tested each against these five markers before they went into our QC pass/fail log. Two of the knob models had riveted inner frame joints rather than welded ones. Setting Up Your Stool
