The sheet music, section by section

Wayfaring Stranger easy piano sheet music section A

Play Section A at x0.5 on the player: from the A4 pickup the verse rises C5-C5-D5 to a held E5, then falls back through D5-C5 to A4 - a single five-finger position over a slowly walking bass.

Wayfaring Stranger easy piano sheet music section B

Section B is the I am going there answer: it starts high, repeating E5 before easing down, and closes through B4 and G sharp 4 onto the final A4. Practice the last two measures alone until the black key feels natural.

In the full score, sing the melody in your head as you play - this is a song before it is a piano piece, and phrasing it like a singer keeps the walking bass patient.

The story behind Wayfaring Stranger

Wayfaring Stranger is an American spiritual whose first verifiable printing appeared in 1858 in Bever's Christian Songster, though the song had traveled through camp meetings and oral tradition for decades before that. Its narrator is a poor wayfaring stranger crossing a world of woe toward a brighter home, a text that has made the tune a companion for mourners, soldiers, and folk singers alike. It spread through Appalachia, entered the country and folk repertoires in the 20th century, and has been recorded by everyone from Burl Ives to Johnny Cash. This arrangement keeps the modal melody in A minor over walking single bass notes.
