the Moonlight Sonata easy piano sheet music full score

Moonlight Sonata is Beethoven’s haunting Adagio, simplified into an easy A minor theme you can learn with the interactive player: the notes and keys light up as it plays, at full or half speed, and you can drag the score to move around. Sheet music, fingering, and a free PDF follow.

Learn it with the interactive player

  • Slow it down: x0.5 or x0.75 while you learn the notes, back to x1 once they flow.
  • Pause anywhere: the current keys stay lit so you can find them on your own piano.
  • Drag the score left or right, or use the 15s buttons, to replay a phrase.

The sheet music, section by section

the Moonlight Sonata easy piano sheet music section A

Begin with Section A, hands separate: the right hand repeats the dotted call on E5 while the left hand holds slow half notes. The piece is marked Adagio, so even x0.75 on the player is a fine practice tempo.

the Moonlight Sonata easy piano sheet music section B

Section B carries the descent and the final cadence. Learn the D5-C5-B4 line under fingers 3-2-1 first, then add the left hand once the shape feels secure.

The story behind the Moonlight Sonata

Beethoven composed his Piano Sonata No. 14 in 1801 and subtitled it Sonata quasi una fantasia. The nickname Moonlight came later: in 1832, five years after Beethoven's death, the poet Ludwig Rellstab compared the first movement to moonlight shimmering on Lake Lucerne, and the name stuck. Beethoven dedicated the sonata to his young student, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi. The original first movement flows in C-sharp minor triplets; the arrangement on this page keeps its dotted-note theme, transposed to A minor with a single-note left hand, so beginners can capture that nocturnal mood from the very first read-through.

How hard is Moonlight Sonata on piano?

The original first movement is an advanced piece: constant triplets, four sharps, and long-held bass octaves. How long does it take to learn Moonlight Sonata?

The full first movement typically takes an intermediate player one to three months. This easy theme arrangement takes most beginners one to two weeks, helped by the slow Adagio tempo - there is simply more time to think between the notes.

The original movement is usually graded around level 6 or higher on exam scales. The arrangement on this page is written for Level 2 players: right hand in one position with a single stretch up to F5, and a left hand that plays slow single half notes only.

What are the notes for the Moonlight Sonata theme?

In this A minor arrangement the right hand repeats a dotted rhythm on E5, rises briefly to F5, then descends D5, C5, B4 toward A4, with G sharp 4 at the final cadence. The left hand alternates slow half notes on A2, D3, and E3. The full note-by-note table is above.
